Is there any difference between the two other than how they are mounted?

Both have advantages and disadvantages, but functionally they do the same thing.
Not sure what knowlegde you’re after.

Like why would Subaru go with a tmci in the xt forester and wrx line. Where ford, Mazda, and vw went with fmic in their hot hatches? Would that be because the engine layout? Or just what they thought was best?

my guess is packaging reasons, FMIC allows for a cooler charge as the heat from the engine isn’t warming it from underneath. Maybe the Flat 4 takes up too much space.

IIRC part of the reason Subaru originally went top mount was to protect it from damage when rallying

I was thinking that but then I thought “what about the radiator?”

if something punches the radiator, you have sufficient warning to shut the engine down before it loses too much coolant. If something punches into the intercooler, it can get sucked into the engine and trash it before you’re even aware there’s a problem.

Boxer engines are wide but not tall, so Subaru had the space to put the intercooler up there. most everyone else uses inline engines which are tall, no room for a TMIC.

True, I guess they stuck with it because of tradition now that they aren’t homologating for WRC.

Depends on your needs. TMIC is air cooled on subaru’s. Cheaper, does the job just fine. FMIC adds weight and complexity, and price.
Has nothing to do with packaging. If billy bob can put a front mount on his wrx than subaru sure as hell could of figured it out for a production scale. The answer is, it’s cheaper and does the job just fine.

Too mount usually has less plumbing. Less plumbing = less lag, weight.
Most importantly, top mount IC usually gets a bitchin hood scoop.

Radiator is required to be front mount according to the rally rules. Also because of the size you can’t really put it anywhere else, aside from in the back of the car.
